چکیده

This paper presents a probabilistic load model for fatigue assessment of old metallic railway bridges. The traffic basis of the model consists of trains obtained from past records and present-day trains obtained from codes. The traffic is divided into four distinct time periods each associated with particular characteristics in rail traffic. Traffic evolution scenarios for the future, in terms of increase in train axle loads or train frequencies, are also considered. With the help of a finite element model of a short-span, riveted railway bridge, train loading is converted into probabilistic fatigue load spectra via Monte Carlo train simulations. The spectra are found to be described well by Weibull distributions. As an example, the application of the proposed load model for the estimation of the remaining fatigue life of a riveted bridge connection is presented. Uncertainties in terms of loading, resistance and modelling are taken into account. The results show that introduction of higher train axle weights in the future is expected to reduce the remaining life of the connection considerably faster than the accommodation of increased freight through higher train frequencies. as random. Model uncertainty is represented by a ratio of actual to calculated stresses.

System effects on the fatigue reliability of deteriorating riveted railway bridges

This paper presents a system-based model for the fatigue assessment of old, deteriorating riveted railway bridge connections, which are built up of a number of basic components. A finite element model of a typical, short-span railway bridge is used to convert train loading into probabilistic fatigue load spectra via Monte Carlo train simulations. Uncertainties in terms of loading, resistance an...

Probabilistic fatigue life estimates for riveted railway bridges

A large percentage of the railway bridges in the UK rail network and around Europe are of riveted construction exceeding in many cases 100 years of age. The remaining fatigue life of these bridges is difficult to estimate due to the uncertainties regarding the fatigue behaviour of wrought-iron and older steel material, which was used for their construction, as well as the actual loading and the...

Fatigue system reliability analysis of riveted railway bridge connections

A system-based model for fatigue assessment of riveted railway bridge connections, comprising a number of basic components, is presented in this paper. Probabilistic fatigue load spectra are developed through Monte Carlo simulation of train passages over a finite element model of a typical, short-span bridge. Uncertainties arising from loading, resistance and modelling sources are taken into ac...

Probabilistic Fatigue Life Updating for Railway Bridges Based on Local Inspection and Repair

Railway bridges are exposed to repeated train loads, which may cause fatigue failure. As critical links in a transportation network, railway bridges are expected to survive for a target period of time, but sometimes they fail earlier than expected. To guarantee the target bridge life, bridge maintenance activities such as local inspection and repair should be undertaken properly. However, this ...

Journal of Bridge Engineering IMPROVED ASSESSMENT METHODS FOR STATIC AND FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF OLD METALLIC RAILWAY BRIDGES

13 A large number of the bridges in the European railway networks are metallic bridges. 14 The increasing volume of traffic and axle weight of trains mean that for many 15 structures the loads today are much higher than those envisaged when they were 16 designed. This paper presents a summary of the different recommendations and 17 advices proposed in “Guidelines for Load and Resistance Assessm...
